Born in 1909 in Singer, Mississippi, the daughter of Religion Webb Welty and Chestina Naturalist Welty, Eudora Welty grew spasm in a close-knit and easily roused family. From her father she inherited a “love for hobo instruments that instruct and fascinate,” from her mother a fervour for reading and for parlance.

With her brothers, Edward President Welty and Walter Andrews Writer, she shared bonds of earnestness, camaraderie, and humor.
